Seán William (Liam) O'Neill (born January 31st, 1975) is an Irish professional wrestler better known by the ring name SurReal. He recently came out of retirement to compete for Ringside Wrestling. Despite his relatively young age, SurReal was forced into what looked like an early retirement as the result of a serious back injury sustained in December 2005. He has made no secret of his disappointment at the way his career fizzled out prior to the injury and had focused on re-establishing his reputation in rW. With the closure of Ringside Wrestling in May 2009 reports circulated that SurReal was in negotiations with Global Championship Wrestling owner Steven Caldera about a possible switch to GCW, the reports proved accurate at Rampage 2009 when SurReal debuted in a six-man tag-team match early in the card.

After moving to America from his native Ireland early in his career, SurReal was quickly able to adapt to include elements of the more smashmouth American style of wrestling into his armoury to compliment the more technical aspects of his classic European style. He spent several years in his early twenties in Japan in an attempt to take onboard some elements of their style as well. Rarely has the term 'All-rounder' been more appropriate than when describing SurReal, although the same can be said of the term 'Underachiever'.

Prior to retiring he was last seen competing against fellow Irishman Jack Murphy in Primetime Central's GTT5 in December 2005. However it was reported in early 2009 that he had been signed up by Ringside Wrestling on a trial basis awaiting medical clearance. Having been cleared medically to compete however his contract was stolen before he could sign it, leaving his status still up in the air. He overcame the thief; Lori Equinox at rW: Center Stage to reclaim his contract and become an official member of the Ringside roster and as a result a contracted professional wrestler for the first time in almost half a decade.

Career

Europe & Japan

O'Neill spent most of his early career wrestling in Ireland, England & Germany as Liam O'Neill. It was during this time he began to establish himself as a standout performer, known for his fluid technical wrestling. He finished opponents with an elevated boston crab which he called "The Easter Rising" after the events which set in motion Irish independence from Great Britain. His popularity reflected where he wrestled, in Ireland he was pushed as a babyface, whilst in England he was very much seen as a heel, despite portraying the same character.

It was whilst wrestling in Germany that met several people who would come to play a major part in his future, the Germans; Phaëton Reginald Lerner & Wolfgang Bruggemann, who wrestled as Rainer and Aceldama respectively. But it was the Canadian; Ryan Dynamic that would have the biggest impact on his career at this point. The two formed a close bond as the more experienced Dynamic took O'Neill under his wing.

In an effort to develop their skills the two relocated to Japan in 1995 where they competed against each other at first, establishing themselves as high drawing performers. Over the next two and a half years the two built upon their reputations in Japan with both men incorporating Japanese style wrestling into their repertoires. In late 1997 they reached the decision that they had achieved as much as they could in Japan and the time had come to take themselves to America in the hope of catching the eye of some of the major wrestling promotions. Before debuting in America they spent a month training in various lucha promotions in Mexico.

Breaking America

Upon arriving in America, O'Neill & Dynamic were signed up a promotion based in California called Western Wrestling Alliance (The promotion was sold to a New York based businessman who moved the company to New York and renamed it Atlantic Coast Championship Wrestling in January 1999.)

The booking team in the Western Wrestling Alliance wanted to use the two as a tag-team and decided to play them off as brothers, so O'Neill became Robb Dynamic. Ryan & Robb Dynamic wrestled under the name The Dynamic Duo and played off the comic-book connotations of that by wearing superhero costumes. The team quickly took off and held the WWA Tag Team Championship three times by the end of 1998.

In the summer of 1999 Ryan Dynamic had made the decision to move from professional wrestling into the growing mixed martial arts scene. Without a partner O'Neill was taken off the roster until December. When he returned he had undergone a complete change in persona, and so in December he re-debuted as "Surreal" Sean O'Neill. He once again portrayed himself as a proud Irishman and in response to the changing face of wrestling his character exhibited more attitude than before; the character quickly became a fan-favourite. On the first event of the new millennium O'Neill betrayed long-time friend "The Diamond Edge" Paul Stewart to win the ACCW Trans-Atlantic Championship, his first title as a singles competitor, in doing so he turned heel for the first time in America.

d.W.o

As a heel O'Neill wasted no time in aligning himself with the ACCW Tag Team Champions; The Real Deal & Baal. The trio referred to themselves as the d.W.o (without actually explaining what the name meant) and they quickly established themselves as the dominant force in ACCW. As more and more people fell victim to the d.W.o it became obvious that something needed to be done to combat them. A group of wrestlers (Dani, Explicit, Spike, Impaler & Komodo Dragon) formed the rival faction KaOs and began feuding with the d.W.o.

SurReal applies a front face lock on the opponent and throws their near arm across his shoulders. He then grabs the opponent's tights and hoists them straight up in the air so they are upside down in a suplex like position, stalling in this position for as long as he can to emphasize the impact generated when he drives them down hard for the pin.

• The Manipulation
  

SurReal lifts the opponent so they are laying across his shoulders. He then shifts the opponent onto his right shoulder so they hang over it. Wrapping his arm around the opponent's neck he drops them head-first to the mat. Now rarely used, this personalised Emerald Fusion is usually saved for supercards or used out of frustration if nothing else seems to be putting the opponent away.

• The Celtic Cross
  

SurReal applies a standing head scissors before spreading his arms out in a crucifix taunt before grabbing the opponent around the waist, lifting them up so they are over his shoulder. From there, he places both his arms under their arms and extends them out to the side as far as they can, before sending the opponent crashing down back first to the mat. Used even more sparingly than "The Manipulation" it's very, very rare to see SurReal performing this move now. Prior to joining the DWO this was his main finisher.

With the opponent on their back, SurReal grabs both legs and locks them into a figure four his arms, placing the opponent's straight leg into his arm pit. SurReal then steps over the opponent rolling them on their stomach as if for a Boston Crab and sits back arching back repeatedly to apply pressure in the hope of forcing his opponent into submission.

• The Easter Rising
  

With his opponent grounded SurReal hooks their knees under his arms, stepping over his opponent he locks in the hold arching back repeatedly to apply pressure. In recent times he has taken a liking to placing his knee in the small of the opponent’s back or occasionally pushing his knee down on the back of their neck.

• Irish Mist
  

Used very rarely to turn the tide when he's coming under severe pressure SurReal spits a green mist into his opponents eyes. (Only used when he is a heel)

• Beast Choker
  

SurReal stands behind the opponent, placing them in an inverted facelock he hooks their near arm with his free arm. He pulls them backwards and up, wrenching the opponent's neck as he drops to his back wrapping his legs around their midsection in a body scissors adding more pressure.

• Buffalo Sleeper
  

Lifting his opponent to sit upright, SurReal takes one of their arms and pulls it up so the arm is above the shoulder and the wrist is trapped by his elbow. With his other hand, he locks his hand around the opponent's chin. Reaching under their arm which is trapped by his elbow he grabs their other hand and pulls back, applying pressure to the opponent's neck and arm.
